Year 1 - Goldfinches and Chaffinches
Autumn 1 Newsletter
Thank you for your support with your child’s transition into Year 1. It has been lovely to see the children getting used to the new routines and we have seen more and more wonderful smiles as the children come into school in the morning. We were pleased to begin the Autumn term with our parent information session, during which we were able to answer some of your questions. We are always happy to help and if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s Class Teacher. We are looking forward to working together with you to support your child throughout their time in Year 1.
In English there will be a great emphasis on handwriting. This will include supporting children in understanding how to sit correctly at a table and how to hold their pencils. The children will participate in lots of gross and fine motor skill warm ups also to help them feel ready to write. Children will begin by writing dictated words which will transition into sentences throughout the term. They will also be spotting and fixing errors as well as engaging with and learning short stories and poems.
In Mathematics, we are learning about place value to 10. We have been sorting and counting objects to 10, comparing numbers within 10 (using the language of fewer, more and the same) and finding one more/one less. We will then be working on addition and subtraction, including finding number bonds to and within 10. There are resources in your child’s pack to help them practise these at home.

In PSHE children will be talking a lot about their feelings. This will include recognising how they are feeling and understanding how to respond to different feelings. We will explore how other people’s feelings can be hurt and how we can support them in feeling better.
Please note P.E. is usually on a Monday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor) BUT outdoor P.E. will be on a Tuesday up until half term with Megastrikers.
Children should bring PE kit in a separate, named, PE bag to get changed into during the day. PE kit can be kept in school for the duration of the term. Please provide black shorts and white t-shirt as well as joggers and a hoody or jumper for cold weather. Trainers will also be needed for outdoor PE. Please ensure that earrings are taken out on PE days – if you are unable to take the earrings out, please provide tape for your child’s ears so that we can cover them up.
Please ensure that your child has a water bottle in school each day containing water for them to drink in the classroom. In KS1 we are lucky to have fruit and vegetable snacks provided. Please note if you wish to send your child in with their own snack it must be fresh fruit or vegetables.
Children in Year 1 will be expected to read 3 times a week and practise their number skills on Numbots for 10 minutes a week. Please ensure books are handed in on Thursdays so they can be changed and given back out to children on Fridays.
Thank you for your help in supporting your child at school. It is very much appreciated.
